Connect Claude or another AI

Let Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Cursor read your library, and add to it if you choose, from your own computer.

Jefield's AI connection is a small program that runs on your computer, started by the AI app you already use. It opens your library there, with a code you make in Jefield, and answers what the AI asks. Everywhere else your library stays sealed: the cloud copy is still only locked bytes.

What you need

  • An AI app that runs local MCP servers: Claude Desktop, Claude Code or Cursor.
  • Node.js 20 or later on that computer, from nodejs.org (opens in a new tab). Check it with node --version.
  • Jefield, signed in.

Set it up

  1. Download the program: jefield-mcp.mjs. Put it in a folder you keep, such as Documents. It's one file and needs nothing else.
  2. Make a code: in Jefield, open Settings, then Connected apps, and choose Connect an app. Name it Claude (or Cursor), choose Make the code, then Copy code. It's shown once.
  3. Tell your AI app where the program is, below: your code where it says PASTE-YOUR-CODE-HERE, and the path of the file you downloaded.
  4. Restart the app and ask: "What did I keep in Jefield lately?"

Claude Desktop on a Mac

In Claude, open Settings, then Developer, then Edit Config. Put this in claude_desktop_config.json and save:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "jefield": {
      "command": "node",
      "args": ["/Users/you/Documents/jefield-mcp.mjs"],
      "env": { "JEFIELD_CONNECTION": "PASTE-YOUR-CODE-HERE" }
    }
  }
}

Claude Desktop on Windows

The same place: Settings, then Developer, then Edit Config. Every backslash in the path is written twice.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "jefield": {
      "command": "node",
      "args": ["C:\\Users\\you\\Documents\\jefield-mcp.mjs"],
      "env": { "JEFIELD_CONNECTION": "PASTE-YOUR-CODE-HERE" }
    }
  }
}

Claude Code

One line in a terminal:

claude mcp add --env JEFIELD_CONNECTION=PASTE-YOUR-CODE-HERE --transport stdio --scope user jefield -- node /Users/you/Documents/jefield-mcp.mjs

Cursor

Put this in ~/.cursor/mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "jefield": {
      "command": "node",
      "args": ["/Users/you/Documents/jefield-mcp.mjs"],
      "env": { "JEFIELD_CONNECTION": "PASTE-YOUR-CODE-HERE" }
    }
  }
}

What it can do

At first it only reads:

  • Search your library by the names, notes, tags and collections you gave things.
  • Recent: what you kept lately.
  • Open one thing: what it is, its versions, and for a picture the picture itself (up to 3 MB).
  • Your collections, with how many things each holds.

To let it add to your library, put "JEFIELD_WRITE": "1" next to the code (in Claude Code, a second --env JEFIELD_WRITE=1). Then it can also:

  • Make a project, empty or from a template.
  • Write a note, and put it on a project.
  • Give a file its next version, marked as from AI, never an overwrite. It's one more version in the file's Versions list, so you can go back.

It can't erase anything for good. Everything it adds is written with the app's own pass, not yours.

What goes in and out

  • To the AI app: only what it asks for. Names, notes, dates, versions and collections as text, and a picture's own file when it opens one (PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF, up to 3 MB). Other files stay where they are; it sees their names.
  • From the AI app: notes as text, projects, and new versions of a file (up to about 45 MB each).
  • Over the internet: only your library's sealed copy, between your computer and Jefield's cloud, locked with your key. Jefield's servers can't read it.
  • What the AI company keeps: what you show an AI app is under that company's terms, not Jefield's. Jefield never trains on your work and never sells it, and nothing reaches an AI until you connect one.

Keep the code safe, and stop it

The code is a key to your library. It sits in the config file on your computer, so keep that file to yourself. To stop the app, open Settings, then Connected apps, and choose Disconnect.

Within a minute it can't add anything more. Disconnecting doesn't end reading, though: the code holds your library's key, so a program that still has the code can still read your library. Delete the code from the config file too.

ChatGPT

Connecting ChatGPT isn't here yet. ChatGPT can't start a program on your computer: it connects only to servers on the internet, and Jefield's cloud holds your library only sealed. Until then, export a file from Jefield and attach it in ChatGPT.
